Gilu Joseph has challenged patriarchy among several social norms by breastfeeding her baby on the cover of the Malayalam magazine Grihalakshmi. The cover, since the time it was released by the verified Facebook account of the publication, has been a couple of debate and discussion.
In the photoshoot, the 27-year-old model from Kerala is seen breastfeeding a child. The inscription on the cover page is in Malayalam however it generally means, “Moms tell Kerala, ‘Kindly don’t gaze, we have to breastfeed’.”

The women on the cover is a Dubai – based Malayali – Gilu Joseph. In a video put out by the verified account of the magazine, Gilu said, “I am a part of Grihalakshmi’s campaign about open breastfeeding a baby. It’s a genuine issue. The society doesn’t provide an environment for women to breastfeed in public areas, feeling safe. It’s a privilege mothers have feeding their kid. You don’t have to be afraid or ashamed of it.” I am extremely proud of my body and only I exercise rights over it.
When she approached with the project, Gilu Joseph did not think twice before agreeing to be a part of this. She said that she thinks of breastfeeding as a privilege that only a mother has.
She hails from Kumily in Idukki district in Kerala and has two sisters. Aside from being a model, Gilu is likewise a writer. She has also penned down a few workmanship pieces in her local dialect Malayalam. She passes by the pseudonym, Gilu Angela.
Gilu has penned the lyrics for Malayalam songs in a few movies. Which includes, ‘2 Penkuttikal’, ‘Sathya’, ‘C/O Saira Banu’, ‘Lailaa O Lailaa’. She has likewise been granted the Palm Pusthakapura Akshara Thoolika grant for her poetry.
In 2016, Gilu Joseph made her silver screen to make a big appearance as a supporting actress in the film ‘Jacobinte Swargarajyam’ alongside Nivin Pauly, Renji Panicker, Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, and Sreenath Bhasi.
